About OMC

Omo's Morningstar Children (OMC) is a nonprofit organization (NGO) providing school education for pastoralists' children in South Ethiopia.

We focus primarily on girls, because they are usually not given an opportunity to attend school. This is because (a) child marriages (engagement as early as age 11), (b) the parent's desire to obtain a high bride price (usually goats), and (c) their role as work horses (i.e., fetching water, collecting fire wood, etc.) interferes with any desire to receive education.

Children in need (i.e., orphans, poverty-stricken, etc.) are selected to participate in OMC's activities and to grow up in one of OMC's Project Sites.

Omo's Morningstar children:
- Live in a safe environment (away from harmful traditional ritual malpractices (i.e., mingi, FMG-circumcision, whipping, lip cutting, etc.)
- Raised in a multi-cultural setting to promote peaceful relationships with neighbor tribes, despite traditional animosity
- Learn Christian values through lifestyle and daily exposure to the Gospel
